An ATEX zone is an area where flammable gases, vapours or dust create a risk of explosion. The ATEX directive requires companies to classify these zones and use only approved equipment.
Classification of ATEX zones
- Zone 0 / 20 — an explosive atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods
- Zone 1 / 21 — may occur occasionally during normal operation
- Zone 2 / 22 — unlikely and only for short periods
ATEX-approved overfill protection and tank monitoring
For tank trucks and storage tanks in an ATEX zone, explosion-proof overfill protection and level sensors are required, in line with applicable ATEX and EN standards.
